Me & Dad at the Ballgame…

SMUSHOctober 9, 2003

Dad & I have always had a great passion for the New York Yankees.  I remember, at that time, feeling like time was gaining on us as a family, for whatever reason.  Dad was 66 & not in the best of health, even though, all things considered, he was doing pretty well… still able to travel & do fun things, etc.

I decided to fly him in for his birthday, from CA to NY, and take him to a Yankee game at the Stadium.  The Yanks had made the playoffs that year, and I wanted us to both have the experience of attending a game together.

I had been to a Yankee game with him once before, way back when I was a kid.  The Yankees pounded the A’s 9-1 May 18, 1975.  They played at Shea Stadium, because Yankee Stadium was under renovation at the time.

But I really wanted to see one with him, as adults… I knew I’d appreciated it more than I did was I was a geeky 9-year old kid.  So he flew in, and we went to see this game; it was Game 2 of the ALCS (American League Championship Series) against the Boston Red Sox.  Couldn’t have picked a better game to take him to! The Yankees beat Boston 6-2. and ended up going to the World Series that year, after Aaron Boone’s walk-off home run in Game 7.

Dad was like a kid in a candy store that day; and it’s probably the happiest I’ve seen him, and without question one of the best times I’ve ever had with him in my entire life.  What a time we had…
